Description

This volume contains a list of books, pamphlets, and broadsides printed in Kentucky from the beginnings of its press in 1787 through the year 1830.
Scope of Text

The Kentucky titles contained in this volume were gathered with the help of libraries containing Kentucky materials, as well as from the American Bibliography of the late Charles Evans; from the comprehensive bibliography in the second volume of Ralph Leslie Rusk's Literature of the Middle Western Frontier; from the invaluable imprint catalogue of the New York Public Library; from a large collection of book dealers' and book auction catalogues; and from various other sources.

•This list of issues of the early Kentucky press, except for newspapers and other periodicals, comprises 379 items, printed or presumed to have been printed within those years. Of the total, 51 items fall into the classification of broadsides, leaving 328 which are books or pamphlets. One hundred eighteen of the titles are concerned with religion. Ninety-six are official publications of the state of Kentucky. Thirty-five titles are almanacs, and 13 are schoolbooks. Political propaganda and controversy is the topic of 37 titles. Eighteen titles concern the Masonic order. Industry is the topic of three of the works. Six titles concern general literature, five titles address travel, and three are orations.
