Description Skinner was founded as an art auction house in Bolton, Massachusetts, by Robert W. Skinner, Jr., in the 1960s. In 1978 Skinner opened a second gallery in Boston and for many years conducted auctions at both locations. More recently, the Bolton gallery was moved to Marlborough, Massachusetts, and auctions are conducted there and at Boston.

Skinner conducts auctions of all types of art, jewelry, automobiles, furniture, toys, wine, collectibles, and, books and manuscripts. Once a year, in the fall, in conjunction with Boston's annual book fair, Skinner's conducts an auction devoted to books and related material.

Among the important works on paper handled by Skinner's was an early copy of the Declaration of Independence which sold for $693,500 in 2007.
