Auction Update Review

The Ides of March Approach

For the week ending Saturday February 25th seven auctions were archived; four denominated in Euros, two in dollars and one in British Pounds.  On thousand eight hundred and thirty-five lots were offered and one thousand three hundred and eleven sold for a 71% sell-through.  The aggregate low and high estimates of all sold were $1,092,043 and $1,637,492 and total sales $1,822,661.  The total high estimate of all lots offered was $2,546,503, total sales 72% of this amount.  When the aggregate value of all lots sold approaches 100% of the aggregate high estimate it suggests a strong market.  When that percentage falls below 70% it suggests that lot estimates are consistently exceeding buyer interest.

For the week two auctions reached or exceeded their aggregate high estimates:

Bruun Rasmussen.  Books on February 19th:  146%

Swann Auction Gallery.  Private Presses and Illustrated Books on February 23rd:  120%

The market seems a bit distracted. What with politics in the United States, nuclear concerns in the Middle East and anxiety in Europe everyone has a reason to look away.  For those who stay focused this makes for good possibilities.
