Auction Update Review

Do You Believe in Magic?

For the week ending March 31st 17 auctions were archived; 6 in US dollars, 6 in Euros and 5 in British Pounds.  Total turnover was $22,261,567, 98% of the aggregate high estimate of all lots listed.  Six thousand and twenty lots were offered and 4,896 sold for an 81% success rate.  It was a good week.

The strength was in prints.  Christies and Sotheby’s together raised $10,203,560 on 341 lots.  Books, maps and ephemera also did well, if not so breathtakingly.  Here too Sotheby’s swung the big bat realizing $5,976,388 on the sale of 185 [of 190] lots of Books from the Library of R. + B.L.  Three other sales reached one million dollars; Heritage’s Vintage Movie Posters - $1,923,834, Bonham’s Fine Books, Maps and Manuscripts - $1,475,678 and again Bonhams for their Polar Sale on March 30th that reached $1,000,173.

The run-up to April has been impressive and bodes well.
