Auction Update Review

A Typical Week

This past week we archived eight auctions:  four denominated in dollars, two in British Pounds and two in Euros.  It was a quiet week.  The low estimate for lots sold was $2,582,800, the high estimate $3,323,184.  Only 51.7% of all lots sold and the total sales compared to the total high estimate was 83.7%.  It was an odd combination of sales.

Four of them were conducted by Bonhams:

The Estate of Charles Williamson and Tucker Fleming, $1,534,625

David Hockney, $914,819

Books, Maps and Manuscripts,  $413,179

Books and Manuscripts, $20,446

Respectively they archived the following percent of their aggregate high estimates:

145%

91%

116%

110%

They did very well.

Neal Auction of New Orleans had two sales and has been steadily increasing their presence in the print world.

Kiefer of Pforzheim, Germany continues to disperse a high volume of printed materials.  Their two auctions reported this week contained 5,148 of the 7,471 lots offered this week.

This coming week there are the following auctions:

Christie’s Prints and Multiples in New York on April 26th;

Aguttes’ Ancient and Modern Books, Ancient papers on April 27th;

AntiquarianAuctions.co.za sale that runs on line beginning April 28th and concludes on May 5th;

Swann Galleries’ Old Master through Modern Prints on April 28th,

Gallery at Knotty Pine’s Antiquarian and Estate Books & Historical Ephemera on April 30th.

Even when it is quiet there is plenty going on.
